真夏のロサンゼルス。ハイウェイの大渋滞にはまってしまったDフェンス（マイケル・ダグラス）は、突然車を捨ててコンビニエンス・ストアへ。彼は両替をして別れた妻のもとにいる娘に電話をかけるつもりだった。しかし、アジア系の店主と小競り合いになり、逆上したDフェンスはバットで店内を破壊。その後、娘のもとに向かったDフェンスは、立ち寄る先々で怒りを爆殺させ事件を起こしてゆく…。
