7歳で失明、その後の音楽人生や麻薬中毒、結婚や愛人関係、トラウマなど、波乱と喜びの双方に満ちた劇的な半生を描く。レイ・チャールズを演じるのは、「コラテラル」のジェイミー・フォックス。撮影期間中は特殊装具により両目を閉じたまま過ごして役作りに励んだという熱演が素晴らしく、5才からピアノに親しんできたフォックスが自ら演奏する熱いサウンドが心にしみる。フォックスは本作でゴールデン・グローブ賞でミュージカル／コメディー部門の最優秀主演男優に輝き、アカデミー賞主演男優賞にも有力候補としてノミネート。
