1928年、ロサンゼルス。クリスティン（アンジェリーナ・ジョリー）は、電話会社に勤めながら女手ひとつで最愛の息子ウォルターを育てていた。ある日、家で留守番をしていたはずのウォルターが忽然と姿を消してしまう。5ヶ月後、警察からウォルターが見つかったとの連絡を受けたクリスティンは彼を迎えに行くが、駅で待っていたのはウォルターではない別の少年だった。再調査を求めるクリスティンに、警察はすさまじいほどの過酷な仕打ちをしてくるのだったが…。
警察権力に対抗し、ひたすら真実を求めて闘い続けた女性を、クリント・イーストウッド監督が寡黙なタッチで描いた見応えのあるサスペンス作品。実在した人物を基に、壮絶な運命に立ち向かう女性の強さを熱演したアンジェリーナ・ジョリーはアカデミー賞主演女優賞にノミネート。ジョン・マルコヴィッチら脇を固める俳優の個性を生かした緻密な演出も素晴らしい。
